Boys might bring a small toy like this spinning top to school in their pockets to play with at recess.

Marbles have always been popular, and boys and girls invented many games to play with them.

A doll such as this would have been treasured by its owner.

These old boots show years of wear and were probably "handed down" to the next child when outgrown by the original owner.

An old leather bookbag

These very old skates, which strapped onto regular boots, may have been used to skate to school in the winter if river ice conditions were good.

Lard and shortening pails were commonly used as lunch containers.

A small cream pail was often used as a lunch container by rural students.

This lunch box with its thermos and cup would be fairly recent (1950s).
